Search for the ideal PHP editor for Ubuntu begins

Saturday December 2ndPHP, Ubuntu Category

Since erasing any trace of Microsoft products on my pc I have been enjoying the experience of using Ubuntu Dapper and now Edgy . But there are certain things I still miss one of them is the great editors that are available. I am green with envy at listening to the Mac users boasting about how wonderful TextMate and BBEdit are so I have decided to start a review of all the different editors I can trying to find the idea editor for PHP on Ubuntu.

So what is a good editor well that depends on what you want it to do. Here I’m going to be reviewing all the main features and also adding my opinions on what I feel the editors lack or excel at. Everyone has their own personal favorite which they will never swap for anything else and will argue with you all day the merits of their choice. Here I’ll try to give an honest opinion and hopefully discover some less widely known editors that are very good choices. I’ll be trying each editor for one week. Why a week well I find when you get a new editor sometimes it takes a day or so before you feel comfortable using the features or finding some of them. Also some features you alway use may not be present and after a few days they really become annoying after a week unbearable.

So what is the criteria, both commercial and open source applications will be reviewed but as I’m looking for an editor which rivals TextMate and BBEdit the maximum I am willing to spend is $125.00 the price of BBEdit.

So I’ve got a lot work to do now and will report back with my first review next week. I will be working my way through all the applications the can be installed from Ubuntu distro first then other open source applications that I can find or are kind suggested for reviewing by yourselves and finally commercial applications.

I’m curious to see what your thoughts are on the various editors. Here are a few you might look at if you haven’t already: Eclipse, Nvu, Bluefish.

I tend to use Emacs, but I do mostly programming and very little web design so a graphical editor isn’t crucial to me.

Thanks Marc for the list I’ve been compiling a list of quite a few different editors to review and I’m made sure those are on the list. I am also curious at some of the commercial editors such as ActiveStates Komodo and also Maguma product but they don’t seem to support Ubuntu yet only Redhat and Suse

Of all the PHP IDE’s available for Gnome and KDE, Eclipse PHP IDE is still the best.
